Using Storyset for Additional Course Illustrations

How to find, customise, and add free Storyset illustrations to your courses — and what to know about crediting them.

CourseConverter includes a built-in illustration library that matches your course theme automatically. When you need a specific illustration the library doesn't include, Storyset is a free source you can use alongside it.

What Storyset offers

Storyset is a free illustration library by Freepik with hundreds of customisable illustrations across business, education, technology, people, and more. You can recolour and adjust each illustration in their online editor before downloading, which makes it easy to match your course's colours.

How to add a Storyset illustration to your course

  1. Go to Storyset and search or browse for an illustration that fits your topic.
  2. Open it in their editor and set the colour to match your course theme. You can also choose from several style variations.
  3. Download the illustration as a PNG (or another image format).
  4. In your course, add an Image block and upload the downloaded file.

The illustration appears in your module like any other image.

Crediting Storyset (important)

Storyset illustrations are free to use, but their licence requires you to credit Storyset wherever you use them — unless you hold a qualifying paid subscription that removes the attribution requirement.

This usually means adding a small credit line such as "Illustration by Storyset" near where the illustration appears, or in your course credits. The exact wording and method are specified by Storyset, and their terms can change, so check the current attribution requirement on their site before publishing.

If you sell or distribute your course

Free illustration licences often have conditions around commercial use and redistribution. If your course is being sold or distributed widely, review Storyset's licence terms for your specific use, or consider their paid option. We can't advise on your particular legal situation — when in doubt, check Storyset's terms directly.

Storyset vs the built-in library

The built-in illustration library is the simplest option: the illustrations already match your theme colours, require no attribution, and insert directly from the image picker's Illustrations tab. Storyset is a good supplement when you need a specific subject the built-in library doesn't cover.
